The Fire Investigation Unit (FIU) is organized for the purpose of assisting the districts Fire Chief’s in complying with Chapter 148, Section 2 of the Massachusetts General Laws. The 14 member FIU responds in teams of 3 to all major fires in the district, and is available 24 hours a day to investigate any incident where a local Incident Commander requests the FIU to assist a local communities fire investigator as well as the state fire marshal’s office. The duties of the fire investigator include structure fires, motor vehicle fires, burns, explosions and the investigation & enforcement of all laws and statutes related to fires & investigations. The unit works closely with local Police Departments and other local fire departments and law enforcement agencies including the state Fire Marshal’s Office with the common goal of investigating fires. The FIU tracks causes of all fires, explosions and burns, accidental or incendiary, to interrupt trends in these fires.
